Collection of family papers, 1940s-1980s.

Collection documents the lives of two early and prominent Fargo families, joined through the marriage of Gilbert and Ruth Roberts. There is biographical material on Gilbert W. Haggart and his diaries for 1953-1954 and 1959 outlines daily activities, and wedding invitation. The Haggart family material includes the diaries (1917, 1925 and 1929) for Ruth Roberts Haggart, several letters, genealogical information on the Haggart family from New York, and article, "The First Civilian Mason Raised in North Dakota," regarding John E. Haggart. The Roberts family material begins with Joseph Balls papers, father to Mrs. Sanuel G. Roberts. There is an 1846 list of his business expenses, and letters to him from 1847 to 1890, including letters from his brother Benjamin Balls at Carbrooks, Norfolk, England. The Samuel Roberts files include his "The Detailed Inside History of Locating the Agricultural College at Fargo," guardianship papers for Laura and Lois Marsh (1914-1917), daughters of Frank Marsh, household expense book, marriage certificate, clippings, First Presbyterian Church dedication speech by Jennie Roberts (1906), and a Y.M.C.A. history speech. There is a nearly complete set of diaries of J. Roberts Haggart (1921-1978) regarding daily events, other school related items. For Marjory Archer Haggart there are two scrapbooks regarding the Federal Emergency Relief Administration in North Dakota (1934-1935) for which she worked as public relations officer; the other scrapbook is for the Debate Squard at Fargo Central High School (1963-1971). As well there is some correspondence and clippings on the Haggart, Archer and Taisey families. The subject files include "Ballad of the Manse," by Rev. Granville R. Pike related to the paying of the mortgage in 1892 for First Presbyterian Church in Fargo.

John Roberts Haggart was born in Fargo, N.D. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1923 and Tuck School of Business with an MBA in 1924, he returned to Fargo as president of Haggart Construction until 1970 when he closed the business and became a CPA. He married Marjory Archer in 1936 and they had two children. His father was Gilbert Haggart and his mother Ruth Roberts, daughter Fargo pioneer Samuel G. Roberts.
